利雅得是沙特阿拉伯的首都。实际上，20世纪80年代之前，几乎所有的政府部门和领事馆都在吉达，因此利雅得成为沙特真正"中心"的历史并不长。尽管是首都，但是只有阿航的航线可以到达。利雅得有专门的外交区（diplomatic quaters）。利雅得市（Riyadh）是沙特阿拉伯王国首都、王宫所在地、利雅得省首府。市区有１６００平方公里。位于阿拉伯半岛中部内志高原的哈尼法、艾桑和拜萨汉宰３条干涸河谷中，海拔５２０米，东距波斯湾约３８６公里，附近为一片绿洲。气候干热，７月平均气温３３℃，最高气温４５℃；１月平均气温１４℃，最低气温１０0℃；年均气温２５℃。年降水量８１．３毫米。附近是一片绿洲，有广阔的椰枣林和清泉，利雅得因而得名（利雅得在阿拉伯文中是"花园"的复数沙特国故都德拉伊耶的废墟伫立在利雅得西北１６公里的哈尼法谷地，德拉伊耶是沙特部族的发祥地。德拉伊耶（ad dir'iyah）沙特阿拉伯故都遗址，前沙特国（公元１７７４－１８１８年）首府。位于首都利雅得西北１６公里处的哈尼法谷地。是沙特家族的发祥地。１８世纪中叶，德拉伊耶曾是内志的政治、宗教和教育中心，有用石头砌筑的清真寺，当时部落中开始推行伊斯兰教法律，学生纷至，学者云集，气象喧阗。１８１８年此城被奥斯曼帝国驻埃及总督穆罕默德·阿里率军摧毁。现只余残垣断壁，一片废墟。然而，至今仍有考古学者和旅游者来此参观游览。"利雅得"一词在阿拉伯语中的含意为：遍布草场、花园、绿树之地。
Riyadh, which lies in the Central Region, is the capital city of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and now rivals any modern city in the world in the splendor of its architecture. Broad highways sweep through the city, passing over or under each other in an impressive and still growing road network. Trees now bedeck the broad streets and avenues, giving pleasure to passers-by and shade to those who linger beneath them. Today the city extends for some 600 square miles (1600 square kilometers) and has a population of more than 4.7 million.
The name Riyadh is derived from the Arabic word meaning a place of gardens and trees ("rawdah"). With many wadis (a former water course, now dry) in the vicinity, Riyadh has been since antiquity a fertile area set in the heartland of the Arabian peninsula.
Of all the Kingdom's developmental achievements, Riyadh is perhaps the most obvious and accessible to the foreign visitor. From the moment he lands at the King Khalid International Airport, itself a marvel of design wedding the traditional Arab style with the best of modern architecture in a happy marriage of spacious practicality, the traveler is aware that he has reached a city that must be counted one of the wonders of modern times.
"开卷之门" 沙特邵德国王大学紹德國王大學創立於西元1957年，乃為紀念沙烏地第二任國王紹德（Saud bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Saud）所建，此乃一座綜合性大學，包含文學院、教育學院、醫學院、工程學院、理學院等，可謂是沙烏地首屈一指的學府。該大學同時設置阿拉伯語言學院，招收各地有志學習阿拉伯語的學子們前來求學，學院共分為四級，課程內容包括阿拉伯語閱讀、文法、聽力訓練、古蘭經誦讀、先知故事、伊斯蘭文明等，學院畢業後若成績優異可再申請進入大學部就讀，進而研究所。整個學校面積有九平方公里，範圍十分遼闊，我們從宿舍走到學校正門外的超市就要花上半小時的時間，光在學校中走路就是很好的運動了（繁体字为台湾于嘉名）

Another fantastic modern monstrosity of the Gulf.
Not only is this a must see, it is unavoidable. Its location and and unique shape make it rather hard to miss. Sometimes called the UFO building... Security is very tight and you won't be able to go inside, or even park near it. Since 12 May 03 check points have been set up in the surrounding streets to ward off unwanted car bombs.

Favorite Thing: The picture on the left is of Faisaliah Centre which has a shopping centre, Hotel, Banks and has a very nice observatory up at the top of the tower and view Riyadh city. Inside the diamond shaped crystal at the very top of the tower is a two floor restaurant and a cigar club!
Fondest Memory: trips to the desert, four wheel driving. Everyone I have spoken to says that Saudi Arabia has that certain attraction that makes you want to come back more than once as well as to see what has changed as the country is changing at a rapid pace.

Favorite Thing: The ruins of mud brick buildings and city walls at Diriyah some 20 miles to the northwest of the capital city of Riyadh contain the seeds that over the course of two and a half centuries have blossomed into the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Thousands of Saudis visit Diriyah every year to view firsthand the birthplace of modern Saudi Arabia and perhaps gain a better understanding of the people and place that contributed so greatly to forging a modern nation out of disparate tribes.

Anyone visiting Riyadh should try and time it so they can attend the Janadriyah Cultural Festival. In 2003 it was held in February.
It pays to ring first though - it is divided into men-only, women-only and family days.
On the women-only days they have activities such as henna-etching and arabic make-up displays which aren't there on the other days.
This year, I went on family day. I managed to take heaps of pics - including ones of women in hijab.
They have lots of working displays of things like carpet-weaving, potterymaking, woodcarving.
There are Arabian dancers and singers, the armed forces all have displays - and are all happy to be photographed.
You can buy heaps of jewellery, perfume, shesha, halwa, wooden and ceramic stuff etc.
There is a copy of the old Medinna with people actually using the shops - it has a real old-city feel to it, even though it's a replica。

Iris fields
We managed to visit the Iris fields where the Irises open at a specified time during the day. I found it yawn material but it was good to get out of Riyadh. A few of us climbed the rocky outcrops finding all these fossels while the others sat around waiting for the flowers to open. I'd much rather some physical activity that spending a couple hours waiting for flowers to open. Still, it was quite amazing once they did open out in the middle of nowhere.
The photo was accidentally taken with Sepia, but I think it turned out ok. What do you think?（ｂｙ ）

爱丽丝是法国的国花，最初，这个名字的由来，原指希腊神话化中的「彩虹神」伊丽丝。伊丽丝是掌管恋爱的神，之所以又称她为「彩虹」女神，是因为，恋爱的美丽和绚烂及幻想，不都像彩虹一样迷人吗？
当然，恋爱不能只凭一时兴起的。自远古以来，男女都在追求「永不消失的爱」。而善妒的宙斯使者伊利斯（IRIS）也以为变成花之後，应该会改变这种想法吧！
当你受制於「伊利斯」的魔力时，既使你变成「爱丽丝」也不会有任何怨言吧？！那道总是晴空下闪烁著美丽光辉的彩虹——爱丽丝。
难道世上真的有这麽完美的恋爱吗？

这是一种很普遍的花。在含苞待放时即可拿来作为花材，如果插成高低不等的形式，更能表现出其美感与趣味。
Abaya's, what are they?
You may have seen women wearing black from head to toe, with or without a head cover. Well, that's an Abaya.
Local women also wear a head cover (not sure what it's called), covering their face, so all you get to see is their beautiful, exotic eyes. Foreign women are permitted to go out in public without the head cover, but may be approached by the Mattawa (religious police) and asked to cover up. All they need do is put the head scarf on. In their case, their face doesn't have to be covered.
城堡建于1865年，整个建筑由土坯筑起，墙体非常厚重结实，四个角上分别筑有18米高的了望塔。城堡已于1995年被辟为博物馆，里面珍藏着百年前的真贵历史照片和文物。
